We are located at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in downtown Baltimore, MD. Our research is focused on investigating cardiac calcium signaling in the heart, the regulation of calcium efflux from cardiac cells and the quantitative aspects of calcium movement in cardiac mitochondria. Research in the lab also centers on cardiac calcium signaling and cellular electrophysiology with a focus on the atria in health and disease and the regulation of blood flow control under microcirculation in the heart.
The Research Team
Below are the current members of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular and Muscular Physiology. To receive more information about each of their research projects, reach out to them at the email address provided.

W. Jonathan Lederer, MD PhD
Professor and Director
Dr. Lederer received his BS in Biochemistry from Harvard (magna cum laude ) and his PhD and MD from Yale. He interned at the University of Washington and then went on to a British-American Heart Fellowship in Physiology at Oxford University. He came to the University of Maryland in 1980

Liron Boyman, PhD
Assistant Professor
Liron received his B.Sc from the Medical and Life Sciences Tel Aviv University School of Medicine and the Faculty of Life Sciences in Israel in 2004. He went on to receive his PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology from the Tel Aviv University School of Medicine in Israel in 2010. Liron came to the University of Maryland in 2010 as a postdoctoral fellow. He is now an Assistant professor in Physiology.

Guiling Zhao, PhD
Assistant Professor
Guiling received her PhD in Pathophysiology from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China.
Her thesis focused on the role of large-conductance Ca2+ activated K+ channel (BKCa) in hemorrhagic shock-induced vascular hyporeactivity. She went on to a postdoctoral fellowship in Physiology at the, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, TN, where she studied the physiological regulation of cerebral artery by ion channels and Ca2+ signaling proteins (BKCa, IP3R, TRPC). Guiling came to the University of Maryland in 2009 and is an Assistant Professor.

Maura Greiser, MD PhD
Research Associate
Maura received her MD from the Technical University in Aachen in Germany and went on to train in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the University of Aachen Medical School. She received her PhD in cardiovascular physiology from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Maura then moved to the University of Maryland to train with Dr. Lederer, where I was appointed Research Associate in 2014.For more information on Dr. Greiser's research Click here

Cecilia Frederick, MS
Research Lab Manager
Ceci received her BA in Biology from Notre Dame of Maryland University. After graduation she started her career at the Johns Hopkins University working with Dr. Lange. In 1988 she moved to UMD to work with Dr. Lederer. While at UMD she chose to pursue a Masters degree in Biochemisty. She has worked on many projects in the lab over the decades, including cell isolation, tissue cell culture, confocal microscopy, Immunofluorescence, as well as other molecular biology and biochemistry techniques. Ceci is currently the Lab Manager.
